In 1972, Porsche’s need to produce a small series of cars for homologation in the Grand Touring category — which required at least 500 units — became the opportunity to revive the "Carrera" name, which had been set aside after the launch of the 911. The engine was upgraded from 2.4 to 2.7 liters, featuring newly forged pistons and aluminum alloy cylinders. The suspension received a revised, sportier setup, while forged alloy wheels dramatically changed the car’s road behavior. A prominent rear spoiler — controversial among purists — altered the traditional Porsche silhouette, but significantly improved stability and aerodynamics. The "Carrera" lettering along the sides became one of the defining features of what would go on to become an iconic sports car.
