The Alfa Romeo Arna (an acronym for Alfa Romeo Nissan Auto) remains one of the most intriguing and debated chapters in 1980s automotive history. Produced between 1983 and 1987, this small family car was the direct result of a strategic joint venture between the Italian state-owned manufacturer and Japan’s Nissan.
A Solution to Financial Crisis
Born during a period of severe financial struggle for the Arese-based company, the Arna project was conceived as a rapid solution to replace the aging, yet beloved, Alfasud. The goal was to combine the legendary mechanical soul of Italy with the renowned production efficiency and reliability of Japanese manufacturing.
However, the collaboration took an unexpected turn: instead of putting a sleek Italian body on a reliable Japanese chassis, the partnership resulted in the Nissan Cherry (N12) bodywork being fitted with Alfa Romeo’s boxer engines, front suspension, and transmission.
Rebadging and Global Identity
Beyond the primary Arna nameplate, the vehicle’s identity was a true case of global rebadging. Depending on the market, it was sold under various guises:

Mechanical Soul vs. Aesthetic Design
Despite the controversial “angular” styling that lacked the traditional curves of a classic Alfa, the Arna was mechanically interesting. It featured the spirited 1.2L, 1.3L, and 1.5L boxer engines that provided the low center of gravity and the “growl” Alfiesti expected.
The assembly took place in a dedicated plant in Pratola Serra, near Naples, while the body panels were shipped directly from Japan. This complex logistics chain, combined with a design that struggled to find its audience, led the Arna to be frequently ranked among the most debated cars in history.
Legacy and Collector Status
