About this car

The Citroën SM, introduced at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, was the result of a partnership between Citroën and Maserati, creating a luxury coupe that combined Citroën’s unconventional style and comfort with Maserati’s performance and elegance. The SM was designed as a high-end Grand Tourer, featuring a sleek and elongated body, with distinctive elements like covered rear wheels and a large rear hatch with horizontal tail lights. The futuristic design continued inside, with a bright and spacious cabin for four passengers and futuristic-looking seats.

Technically, the SM was based on a shortened and lowered version of the DS platform, making it sportier. It inherited Citroën’s renowned hydropneumatic suspension, which had proven effective both on regular roads and in rally racing. The SM also introduced the new “Diravi” steering system, where hydraulic assistance helped align the wheels even when the car was stationary. However, Citroën faced challenges with the engine, as their existing lineup didn’t include powerful enough engines for the SM’s high-end positioning.

This led Citroën to acquire Maserati in 1968, enabling them to use Maserati’s expertise in high-performance engines. The SM was equipped with a 2.7-liter V6 engine from Maserati, producing 180 horsepower and capable of reaching a top speed of 220 km/h.

The SM had a significant following despite its high price, but the 1973 oil crisis led to its discontinuation, alongside the aging DS. Production ended in 1975 after nearly 13,000 units were sold, with some final cars assembled by Ligier. Though no longer in production, the SM remained a coveted vehicle for car enthusiasts who appreciated its advanced technology and unique design, marking the end of an era for Citroën’s large luxury coupes.
