1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo Concept
MODEL YEAR: 1968
The Alfa Romeo 33 Bertone Carabo, also known simply as the Alfa Romeo 33 Carabo or Bertone Carabo, is a concept car created in 1968 by Alfa Romeo in collaboration with the design house Bertone.
It was the first of six concept cars built on the chassis of the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, designed by renowned Italian car designers during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The name "Carabo" comes from a beetle species, Carabus auratus, known for its metallic, vibrant colors. The car's bold design, featuring luminescent green with orange accents and golden windows, along with its unique vertically-opening doors resembling beetle wings, made its debut at the Paris Auto Show in October 1968.
Though it remained a one-off model, the Carabo greatly influenced designer Marcello Gandini and Bertone, inspiring future iconic cars. Notably, its overall shape and the scissor doors were key design elements carried over to the Lamborghini Countach in 1974, which set a trend for many Lamborghini models to follow. The Carabo is currently preserved at the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese.
