In 1966, a German car was born from the design of Pietro Frua, a renowned Italian car designer who collaborated with various European brands, including the Bavarian company Glas and Maserati. Although the car’s design is distinctly Italian, its engine was provided by BMW. That same year, BMW acquired Glas, and the 1600 GT was introduced to the market under BMW’s name.
The car features a lightweight body (960 kg) paired with a 1600 cc engine producing 105 horsepower, allowing it to reach a top speed of 195 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 10 seconds. These were impressive figures for the time. It was also praised for its excellent handling, thanks to its compact dimensions and advanced suspension system, which included stabilizing bars to support high-speed cornering.
Today, only about a hundred units of this rare and highly sought-after 1960s car are still known to exist, making it a valuable collector’s item.
