1990 Maserati Shamal

Unveiled to commemorate Maserati's 75th anniversary, the Shamal became a milestone in the brand's history, showcasing the pinnacle of performance within the Biturbo lineup. Its debut coincided with Fiat Group acquiring a 49% stake in Maserati, marking a transformative era for the Trident brand. Designed in collaboration with the renowned Marcello Gandini, the Shamal featured a bold redesign, including signature asymmetrical rear wheel arches—a hallmark also seen in Gandini’s Lamborghini Diablo and Cizeta V16T.

Beneath the aggressive silhouette lay a potent 3.2-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine, boasting 322 horsepower and paired with a 6-speed manual transmission by Getrag. This powerhouse accelerated the Shamal from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, achieving a top speed of 260 km/h. Its compact dimensions, derived from the Biturbo Spyder's short wheelbase, enhanced agility but demanded precise handling skills, reinforcing its appeal to purist drivers.

Maserati produced only 369 units of the Shamal between 1990 and 1995, making it a rare collector’s gem. With its elite craftsmanship, a price tag of 126 million lire, and a reputation for challenging yet rewarding driving dynamics, the Shamal solidified its place as an icon among gentleman drivers and Maserati enthusiasts worldwide.
