In the early 1980s, American car enthusiasts were captivated by Porsche 930 conversions that mimicked the aggressive look of the Porsche 935 race car. Responding to this trend, Porsche introduced the exclusive "Flachbau" (flat-nose) conversion in 1981, available only through its Special Wishes Program and handcrafted in the Porsche repair department.
The full Flachbau package included a 935-style front end with pop-up headlights embedded in the fenders, a centrally mounted oil cooler, vented front arches, side skirts, and rear fender air intakes. An early alternative design integrated fixed headlights into the front spoiler—only 58 of these were produced. Between 1981 and 1984, Porsche manually converted 204 vehicles with the full pop-up headlight setup.
From 1984, the Turbo Flachbau became part of the official factory options list under the Porsche Exclusive program, with 686 units produced in-series. Depending on the configuration, conversion costs reached up to 27,500 DM in 1985. When paired with factory performance upgrades, the price of a 3.3L Turbo nearly doubled.
Many buyers opted for partial conversions, often choosing only the rear fender air intakes without altering the front. Today, original factory-built 911 Turbo 3.3 Flachbau models are among the rarest 911 variants.
